Frank is a good man manager and proven to be tactically very adaptable to the strengths of his squad. Like at Brighton, the manager was not the reason Brentford were so well run, and was not who identified and brought in players, that is entirely down to the club's setup. Brentford will be fine while Tottenham will have the same issues they do now.

    No pressure then John?

All Thomas Frank has to do is:

    • Bring glory
    • Deliver more trophies
    • Produce exciting, winning football
    • Challenge for the Premier League

    Simple...

  • 'Game against PSG will massively hit him as big time'published at 09:13 British Summer Time 13 June

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on BBC's Football Daily podcast

The game against [Paris St-Germain] will massively hit him as the big time. He will be taking on the team that has been the team of the season in Europe.

It's something that Thomas Frank, for all his experience, has not had to cope with [before].

What Tottenham fans will want is glory.

    They will want more trophies.

They will want the best of Ange Postecoglou's football, but also want it to be consistently winning football and to challenge for the Premier League.

That's all he has to do.

Lack of preparation time 'will be Frank's biggest challenge'published at 09:10 British Summer Time 13 June

I think Thomas Frank is a very good manager, but the big difference between Brentford and Spurs (or any team playing in Europe) is the lack of preparation and training time between the midweek and weekend matches. You don’t get the 4-5 preparation and rest days between matches. That will be Frank's biggest challenge (well at least on the playing side!)

  • Champions League the aim for Frankpublished at 09:08 British Summer Time 13 June

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker, speaking to BBC Sport

Ange Postecoglou won Spurs their first major European trophy for 41 years and has gone. So already you have to wonder what does Thomas Frank need to do this season to keep his job?

The aim for Frank will be to keep them in the Champions League, and whether that is by making the top four or five, that is not going to be easy.

We've seen how the demands of Champions League football has affected the league form of teams like Newcastle and Aston Villa in the past couple of years, especially now there are so many group games.

That is a big ask for this squad, to compete on both fronts.

We know this Tottenham team is better than 17th place, because they finished fifth in Postecoglou's first year, but other Premier League teams have improved since then.

  • A chance for very early silverwarepublished at 09:05 British Summer Time 13 June

Tottenham have two pre-season friendlies planned, and they are against blue riband opponents - Bayern Munich and London rivals Arsenal - while they are also scheduled to face Newcastle United in South Korea.

As for Spurs' first competitive match of the 2025-26 season? That comes on 13 August - against Champions League winners Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup. A chance for very early silverware.

It's interesting that Spen should say that Thomas Frank has experience of leading Brentford to a mid-table finish in the Premier League.

Would mid-table have been enough for Ange Postecoglou to save his job last season, combined with the Europa League title?

What do you think Thomas Frank needs to achieve next season to be considered a success?

Would any improvement on Spurs' 17th-place finish in the Premier League and a decent run in the Champions League be deemed enough to be at least heading in the right direction?

Or should Tottenham be competing for domestic cup trophies and be vying for Champions League qualification through their league position?

Thomas Frank has proved himself capable of building a club from Championship up to mid-table in the Prem. This is now the next natural step up. I just fear for him, like Graham Potter at Chelsea, that it's a step too far with the wrong people above him at the club.

Tottenham have an abysmal record when it comes to playing Chelsea away from home in the Premier League, winning on just one of their 33 trips to West London.

Maybe Thomas Frank is the man to end the curse - he has led Brentford to three victories in four trips to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, with three consecutive wins and an aggregate score of 8-1 coming between 2021-22 and 2023-24.

One of the good things for Thomas Frank about ing Tottenham is that he won't have to face them anymore.

As Brentford boss Frank oversaw just one win in nine meetings with Spurs in all competitions, with five defeats and three draws.

It can be true that Ange Postecoglou won a trophy and genuinely moved the club forward and still that parting ways was the right call. Progress isn’t always linear and sometimes a different manager is simply a better fit for the next stage. Thomas Frank is a fantastic appointment, tactically sharp, proven in the Premier League and great at building structure. With the squad Spurs have and the foundation Ange laid, there’s reason to be optimistic. All in all, it’s a good time to be a Spurs fan.

    Re Tony, Colchester.

Winning a trophy when you haven't done so for 17 years is always a step forward. I'm not saying his [Ange Postecoglou's] sacking was wrong, just that to say 'like others he hasn't taken us forward' is not quite right.

  • How does Frank compare to other Premier League managers?published at 08:47 British Summer Time 13 June

Frank ranks 16th in of points-per-game (1.32) and 15th for win rate (35.5%), according to Opta.

Of all those managers, Frank, Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta have been the only ever-presents.

Happy for Thomas Frank, but it must be a scary job to step into: Win a trophy? Get sacked. Perform well in the league but don’t win a trophy? Get sacked. Tottenham have deeper problems than managerial ones.

  • Frank compared to other Brentford managerspublished at 08:42 British Summer Time 13 June

So where does Thomas Frank rank among Brentford's previous managers?

In of win rate, the Dane ranks seventh out of 24 Brentford bosses who have taken charge of 50+ league matches with 41.4%.

That may not seem too impressive, but it should be noted that Brentford have never played in the Premier League under any other manager.

When you look at the clubs coming up from the Championship now and struggling, Brentford were such a small club with a small budget and it's incredible how he has cemented their place in the Premier League.

He made that shrewd g of Christian Eriksen when the times were a little bit tough for them. He has dealt with the Ivan Toney situation really well. He's got a keen eye for players and has had a huge influence on who comes in at that football club.

So it's a big, big loss for Brentford.
